Simple Sanctuary: Elevated Minimalism Bath Design

Home is our sanctuary. A place of peace and respite. And for many, there is no place that encompasses that feeling quite like the primary bath. When envisioning a dream bath design, we often find ourselves scrolling through an extensive list of amenities and features. However, approaching the design journey with a nod to minimalism may be the key to creating a space that is truly designed for well-being.

Architect Mies van der Rohe famously coined the phrase “less is more” as the guiding principle of minimalism. Today, many find that less means more mental clarity and peace as the connection between our physical environments and well-being continues to be explored. Embracing an interior design style rooted in minimalism may help improve mood, enhance focus, and create harmony in our homes and lives. But leaning toward a simplified design doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty or luxury.

Clean lines and natural light create a tranquil respite in this Chicago bath designed by Orren Pickell Building Group.

Today’s concept of minimalism doesn’t require us to forego our comforts. Instead, the movement encourages us to think deeply about what truly holds value in our lives and emphasize those qualities as we approach interior design. In the bath, this often means a focus on quality of materials, selecting elements that are streamlined yet luxurious. Sustainably sourced wood, porcelain tile, slate, and matte finishes create a palette of refinement without cluttering the space or mind. Clean, simplified lines promote a sense of calm and infuse the design with a balance of modernity. Décor items are carefully curated bringing in only those that truly add inspiration to the room. Minimalistic design also requires us to intentionally edit our collections of personal care items. Thoughtful storage solutions are essential to providing the space necessary to maintain this clutter-free environment.

Wood-Mode Geneva doors and Belwith-Keeler matte black hardware create harmony and elegance in a bath design inspired by elevated minimalism.

Minimalism is rooted in functionality and creating our bathroom sanctuary requires thoughtful consideration of how the space will be used. The practice allows us to reflect on the meaning of sanctuary and how that definition can enhance our daily routines. We can then use these ideas to guide the selection of features and amenities within the bath. For example, is a vanity ideal for personal care or would extra counter space be more fitting? Does the thought of a soaking tub or steam shower invoke greater feelings of relaxation?

A neutral palette, clutter-free countertops and a space fully dedicated to relaxing bath experiences all come together in this simple sanctuary by JW Kitchens.

Home design is often more about feelings than aesthetics. The desire to create a sanctuary within the bath often stems from a need to unwind, relax, and recharge. Turning into these feelings can be a powerful guide as you envision the transformation of your dream home.
