Georgetown’s Little Jewel
Creating a kitchen inspired by cooking legend, and the home’s previous occupant, a famous female chef, was focused on honoring the legacy of the culinary master as well as the home’s historic past in the heart of Georgetown. Traditional and classic styles combine in this one-of-a-kind kitchen to create a space with a more modern European design.

This home’s kitchen remodel is inspired by culinary legend and former occupant of the home. While the home’s former celebrity occupant spent her time in the kitchen devising the best practices for cooking and recreating recipes, the homeowner wanted to bring this historic Georgetown Washington, D.C. home into the 21st century, without losing the characteristics that make up its unique and diverse history. And Wood-Mode designer, Amy Collins made it happen.

Combination of floor to ceiling custom height inset and full overlay cabinets provide storage for cookware, dishware, trays and more, along with stainless steel open shelving combine to provide traditional and classic with a more modern European design. In fact, the 114 inch height of the wall shelving goes beyond a standard 96 inch height, requiring full customization, a Wood-Mode specialty.
An original brick wall was salvaged and exposed along the entire backwall of the kitchen. Amy designed the cabinetry to be quiet, to blend with the brick and allow the light coming into the house to be celebrated. The majority of the cabinets are stained with a warm grey on Rifted Oak on wood veneer that provides a very tight frame but takes stain beautifully, bringing in the texture of the wood with the brick, while lower cabinets located on the island are in a lighter, neutral tone.
Creative storage organization was optimized below the counter, and includes space for spices and bottles, pull out shelves for storing baking pans, and a pull out trash can near the prep area for easy use during cooking prep.
